There seems to be an obsession with Korean dramas and K-pop, so anything related to Korean culture in Hong Kong has been widely accepted in recent times. Hong Kong has a plethora of Korean food including Korean BBQ restaurants, Korean fried chicken joints, Korean supermarkets, and more. With that being said, there actually aren’t very many Korean dessert spots. Considering grabbing dessert after a meal is a ritual in Hong Kong, it was just a matter of time to find a Korean dessert cafe pop up in the city.
Located in Hong Kong’s Korea town in Tsim Sha Tsui is a new-ish spot called Bingo 冰庫 which serves mainly shaved ice or as Bingo calls it, “ice flakes.” Bing (冰) in Chinese means ice, which is where the connection to ice flakes comes in. The menu also offers Korean-style stuffed toast, sweet rice cakes and a selection of drinks including coffee, tea and juices. We were eyeing the picture of a giant honeydew melon hollowed out filled with ice flakes, topped with melon balls and a melon popsicle, but, unfortunately this was sold out. We settled on a couple mountains of shaved ice and two types of Korean stuffed toast.
Ice Flakes with Oreo Cookies ($48 HKD or $6.20 USD). This was honestly pretty mediocre. The ice flakes didn’t have a very strong milk base so it pretty much tasted like eating crushed Oreos on ice.
Ice Flakes with Injeolmi ($48 HKD or $6.20 USD). Injeolmi is a type of Korean rice cake similar to mochi covered with gomul which is a powder made of ground sesame, soy or azuki beans. Again, the milk base in the ice flakes was not potent enough making the entire dessert quite bland.
Injeolmi Toast ($30 HKD or $3.85 USD). I set my expectations pretty low for this, but the toast was actually mad tasty. The injeolmi is sandwiched between two slices of bread then dusted with gomul powder. Love the texture of the soft crispy toast with sweet chewy injeolmi.
Honey & Injeolmi Toast ($30 HKD or $4.50 USD). This was essentially the same as the Injeolmi Toast above but topped with a ball of vanilla ice cream and drizzled with honey. SO GOOD!
