Taipei is one of our favorite food destinations. It’s close to Hong Kong, fairly cheap, and the food options are limitless. On our most recent trip to Taipei, our major reason for visiting was to check out the amazing murals painted by both local and international artists for POW! WOW! Taiwan. Artists such as Aaron De La Cruz, Apex, INSA, James Jean, Madsteez, flew in from all over the world creating gigantic murals throughout the city! The murals are up indefinitely so if you’re in town, check them out!
During our trip, we definitely had a lot of time to eat. For some of our friends, it was their first time in Taipei, so we wanted to make sure we gave them the full Taipei experience. Night Markets are a big deal in Taipei and since there are so many to choose from. We decided to hit up Raohe Street Market, one of the oldest night markets in Taipei conveniently located in the Songshan district with practically every classic street food item you would want to eat including oyster vermicelli, spare ribs stewed in herbal soup, pepper meat buns, stinky tofu, big sausage wrapped around little sausage and more.
Any idea what this is? It’s deep fried milk! When deep fried, these cubes of congealed milk turn into balls with a crispy crust and creamy center. We were off to a decent start!
Deep fried everything including chicken, squid, shrimp, tofu, etc. is pretty common at most night markets.
This Small Sausage Wrapped in Big Sausage (大餅包小餅) which is exactly as it sounds with a smaller Taiwanese pork sausage wrapped in a slightly larger sticky rice sausage. It’s similar to a hot dog but replacing the bun with sticky rice and the hot dog for Taiwanese sausage.
We got pretty excited when we saw the sign for DEEP FRIED OREOS !!! But even more excited when we saw DEEP FRIED SNICKERS !!!
These are the DEEP FRIED SNICKERS BARS! How could these not be tasty consisting of melted nougat, caramel, peanuts, enveloped in milk chocolate with a crispy crust.
Can’t go wrong with fresh fruits and juice! Especially an ice cold glass of water melon juice to help with Taipei’s deadly heat and humidity.
Don’t be fooled by this corn. It looks hella tasty, but it has a weird waxy texture and had zero flavor.
Now this is worth waiting for!
This is essentially an okonomiyaki with bacon and eggs topped with takoyaki sauce, mayonnaise and bonito flakes.
These silver dollar pancakes are the beginning of azuki bean pancake sandwiches!
For a street vendor, these beef cubes were actually mad decent.
Last but not least, the famous Crispy Pepper Buns from 福州世祖胡椒饼. These buns have a crispy crust filled with piping hot green onions and seasoned meat.
